Apple to Expand Green Initiatives in Chinese Manufacturing

In Chinese manufacturing news, last week Apple announced a major expansion of its own environmental responsibility operations in China. In addition to the creation of almost one million acres of managed eco-forests, Apple also plans a buildout of clean energy infrastructure for their manufacturing facilities and office spaces.

The forest initiative in particular, is part of a multi-year plan in cooperation with the World Wildlife Fund that will help Apple take another step in a long-term goal of achieving net-zero impact on the world’s virgin fiber.

“Forests, like energy, can be renewable resources,” said the head of Apple’s environmental efforts, Lisa Jackson.

“We believe we can run on naturally renewable resources and ensure that we protect—and create—as much sustainable working forest as needed to produce the virgin paper in our product packaging. This is an important step toward that goal and our commitment to leave the world better than we found it.”

In addition to its announced forestry initiative, Apple also provided additional details on its planned 40-megawatt solar farm in the Sichuan Province. Apple is also in the process of completing two 20-megawatt solar installations as part of their plans to expand renewable energy projects to Chinese factories that manufacture Apple parts and products.

Besides Apple, many other American-based companies are choosing China as the prime location for their own manufacturing efforts due to the multiple benefits that outsourced overseas manufacturing can provide. While Chinese manufacturing often gets an unfair reputation, when closely analyzed, it is proven that China has a long history of delivering high-end parts and products for American industries – including many items that practically everyone in America uses daily.

Apple has found a manufacturing base that provides numerous benefits to the tech giant, thanks to an abundance of raw materials and a vast, growing labor force which help cut down on their production costs. Now Apple’s goal is to continue their Chinese manufacturing production in a sustainable way. That’s good news for everyone and look for other companies and manufacturing plants to follow their lead in the near future.

If your company is considering Chinese manufacturing for your business, it is important to navigate through the industry of overseas manufacturing with a trusted, reliable partner with the experience needed to provide the most effective results. You don’t need to be a tech-giant like Apple to gain all the benefits that outsourced, overseas manufacturing can offer.
